Photo slideshow or video?
Short-form platforms take two kinds of posts built from still images. In a carousel the viewer swipes through the pictures. In a video the pictures change on their own. They look alike, but people use them differently, so it helps to know when to pick which.
Where each format lives
| Platform | Swipeable carousel | Video from images |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Yes, photo mode | Yes |
| Yes, carousel post | Yes, Reels | |
| YouTube | Community posts only | Yes, Shorts |
YouTube Shorts only takes video, so a slideshow has to be rendered as one before it can go there.
When a carousel works better
Pick a carousel when the content needs reading time. Tips, steps and longer facts are easier to take in when the viewer sets the pace, and nobody has to pause to finish a sentence.
Carousels also suit posts you want people to save. "How to" guides, checklists and "mistakes to avoid" are the kind of thing people bookmark and come back to.
They work best when every slide stands on its own. If each slide is a separate fact, swiping feels natural.
When a video works better
Reels and Shorts have their own feeds, and the only way into them is a video. If you want to post on YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels, render the slides as a video.
Video also fits short text. A hook and a few words per slide are easy to read in the two or three seconds each image stays on screen.
And if you plan to use a trending sound, video is the place for it. Music counts for more in video feeds, and adding a popular sound inside the app takes a few taps.
Getting both from the same slides
You don't have to commit to one format. One set of slides can become a carousel in TikTok photo mode, a 4:5 carousel on Instagram once you re-export it in that size, and a vertical video for YouTube Shorts and Reels.
Posting the same idea in several formats is a cheap way to find out what your audience prefers. When you compare them, look at saves, shares and comments as well as views.
Tips for both formats
- Keep text near the middle of the frame. Platform buttons cover the right edge and the bottom.
- Use high-contrast text: white with a dark outline, or dark text on a light box.
- In videos, three seconds per slide is a good starting point for short text. Longer text needs more time.
- End with a question. It brings comments in either format.
How Pro100 Slides handles this
Pro100 Slides creates the slides once and exports them either way: PNG files for carousels, or a vertical video with a slow zoom and soft transitions for Shorts and Reels. Switch the format to 4:5 for an Instagram carousel and the slides are redrawn at that size.
